Diesel locomotives are often used on freight trains on electrified tracks as part of the journey is on non-electrified areas. They are just too lazy to change locos at these places, and we do not have enough electric locos.
The HST diesel expresses are still in widespread use on the east coast line even though it is electrified all the way to Scotland. But there are not enough class 91's to run the service. Many more trains are needed recently to carry the ever increasing numbers of passengers.
The HST's are still the best trains we ever had in many peoples' opinion - including mine!
